Sporting nation

Slovenes like to boast that they are a sporting nation, as 40% of the population take part in some kind of sporting activity.

 

 

The most popular is alpine skiing, which has a very long tradition in Slovenia. Many champions were born here: Tina Maze, Jure Košir, Primož Peterka, Rok Benkovič, Dejan Košir, Mateja Svet, Bojan Križaj, Jure Franko, Mitja Kunc, Petra Majdič, rtc.

 

Slovenia has a worldwide leading know-how in hosting major winter sports events. Famous venues like Planica (ski jumping), Pokljuka (biathlon), Maribor and Kranjska gora (alpine skiing) have been hosts of many world championships and cups. Bled hosted the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2003.

 

World known is also the Slovenian company ELAN, which is among the top manufacturers of skis and snowboards in the world.
